Description

Pennypit Park features two fields, one of which is used for football matches, and other for rugby. It is located in Prestonpans, a small fishing town in Scotland. This is the permanent ground of Preston Athletic F.C. that moved to the ground in the early 1960s, as well as Preston Lodge R.F.C. This is not a large stadium, which capacity reaches 1,500 people. There is one stand which has 313 seats.

Preston Athletic used to use Preston Links Park, but they were forced to change the ground so that Cockenzie Power Station could be built. The stadium appeared on one of the pits used for mining coal in this area. At that time, the miners earned a penny per shift, and that is why it was known as ‘The Penny Pit.’ After the closure of the pit, the equipment was removed, and the pit stopped its existence. It soon became a play area for the children. The football pitch was built in the early 1950s along with a running track around it.

In 1970, thanks to the mutual efforts of Preston Lodge R. C. and the Council, a rugby pitch was built as well. A pavilion was constructed in the early 1970s. Not many improvements were made over the next several decades. In the 1990s, an idea of building sports complex was born. The Pennypit Trust got around 500,000 pounds to support the project. The work began in 1992, and the complex was ready for use in 1994.
